With 1 in 31 children diagnosed with autism in the United States, the need for accessible autism care increases year over year. With over 3% of children needing autism services, these families are usually met with long waitlists where the wait for services stretches to months, and even years. In order to mitigate the effects of autism, it is imperative to tackle behavioral challenges as early as possible. That is why any delay in accessing care is detrimental to the child’s overall development.
Acclaim Autism, a Philadelphia-based behavioral healthcare provider, wanted to help children and adolescents as soon as possible. With the bulk of the delay coming from manual data extraction from clinical documents—such as diagnostic reports, evaluations, and insurance records—there needs to be a solution to quickly and accurately extract patient data. The company partnered with Appian, a software provider specializing in process automation, to do just that. Through this partnership, Acclaim Autism was able to build and implement an AI-powered solution that automatically extracts, categorizes, and validates data for patient onboarding. Apart from speed, implementing this solution reduced data extraction errors from 80% to 5%. As a result, what used to require multiple staff reviewing several spreadsheets and documents, can now be completed through a single AI-powered automation with human oversight. . The patient onboarding process at Acclaim Autism was reduced from 6 months to now only 4 days.
This achievement in reducing patient wait times while improving accuracy earned Acclaim Autism an Innovation Award at this year’s Appian World conference in Orlando, Florida. More importantly, this work reflects the company’s core mission: delivering care to children and adolescents with autism as quickly as possible. Now, families no longer have to wait months to access the care their children need.
